The Happy Trail plate is 3/16" aluminum, mounts to the frame and crashbars and doesn't look half bad, imo. To each his own. If you have the bolt together type, you will need the MK-2 mount kit.

If the bolts that secure the skid plate to the rear mount plate are removed, it looks like the skid plate can be rotated away from the bottom of the engine in order to grant access for an oil change. page 243597 new used 2012 suzuki dl1000 v strom 1000 pictures. I find the Happy Trails site confusing, in their description for the skid plate it says;I am going to give the plate a shot, I spoke to Jim at Happy Trails and he was happy to work with me with my Givi bars to get something to work.
