As the Youth Coordinated Entry System (YCES) Regional lead for all of West LA, SPY works closely with agencies throughout the county to ensure that young people have equitable access to developmentally appropriate housing resources, including shelter, transitional housing, Rapid Rehousing, Permanent Supportive Housing, and supported connection to a young person's natural support system.
In 2019, SPY launched our transitional housing program, Roots to Grow, in partnership with Venice Community Housing (VCH). A recent study of more than 350 runaway and homeless providers throughout the United States identified four top causes for homelessness among LGBT youth: (1) family rejection resulting from sexual orientation or gender identity; (2) physical, emotional, or sexual abuse; (3) aging out of the foster care system; and (4) financial and emotional neglect.In shelters, while searching for housing, and on the streets, these youth may endure traumatic experiences, such as harassment, stigmatization, and abuse from peers and shelter staff as a result of their sexual orientation and/or gender expression.To address these challenges, LGBT youth who are homeless need access to safe, supportive housing.

Homelessness is a devastating experience that has a significant negative impact on an individual’s physical and mental health, well-being, functioning, human development, and life trajectory—and LGBT runaway and homeless youth are at high risk for a number of negative experiences and outcomes.LGBT youth experience homelessness at higher rates than non-LGBT youth for a range of reasons. SAY’s Street Outreach team helps youth ages 12-24 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness by addressing their most immediate needs. Youth Housing Project Association Inc. (YHP) provides supported, unsupervised, medium-term accommodation to young people aged from 16-21 years old who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Youth Homeless Services (YHS) leads the City’s response to youth homelessness via direct grants to community organizations that provide services (housing, street outreach, youth drop-in centers, etc.) Since our founding, Safe Place for Youth has focused on providing a safe space for homeless and at-risk youth to receive critical resources and a connection to community. For over 40 years, Covenant House has sheltered and cared for these young people – now standing as a powerful human rights movement for homeless and trafficked youth in 31 cities across 6 countries.
Our “hub of hope” Access Center in Venice offers day-services to over 1,000 youth annually, including on-site housing assessment and connection to available housing programs.
