The setting is Miguel Street in Port of Spain, Trinidad, roughly the 1940's. Naipaul does an amazing job of painting a vivid picture of what life in Trinidad was like back in the old days. This is one of my favorite V.S. For those who love Caribbean literature this is a must read.
I had difficulties choosing which of his book to read. All in all, Naipaul's writing draws the reader into the vibrant life of Miguel Street, lending the understanding of life in a poor Port of Spain neighborhood in the early mid-twentieth century.Naipaul was born and raised in Trinidad, to which his grandfathers had emigrated from India as indentured servants. It’s a series of interconnected short stories, but the characters in them are clearly based on people the author knew as a boy in Trinidad.
I find it a comic achievement of the highest It's unique--and unique in Naipaul's work, of which I've read a dozen, my favorites including House for Mr Biswas, The Loss of El Dorado, and Among the Believers.
Just to spare it for the next day even when yesterday I was about to finish I left 5 last pages in greed to fill the passage for next day.A collection of short stories about growing up in Miguel Street in Trinidad. From the narrator's perspective, we are introduced to every character in his vicinity, portraying the diversity and the interaction between them. But we who lived there saw our street as a world, where everybody was quite different from everybody else. He is focused on writing about the history of areas and peoples that are usually forgotten.

In most developing societies the desire to move to greener pastures dominates the ambitions of people. Now I'm not a fan of vignettes, because to me the story can feel quite disjointed.
